  • Safer Streets further enhances safety in Bingham

Safety measures in Bingham have led to a 79% fall in antisocial behaviour in Bingham.

The town has also seen a 51% drop in public disorder offences and a 43% reduction in criminal damage thanks to the installation of new CCTV and ongoing work by Nottinghamshire Police and partners to make the town a safer and even more welcoming place.

The crime reductions were over the last 12 months from January 2024 when the project started, compared to the previous three-year average.

Funded by the Home Office’s Safer Streets programme and coordinated by the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Nottinghamshire, the project has focused on reducing crime, antisocial behaviour, and violence against women and girls through a range of measures.

The Safer Streets funding has enabled the installation of seven state-of-the-art CCTV cameras across key areas of Bingham, including the marketplace, main precinct, and central car park.

These high-definition cameras, equipped with advanced night vision technology, provide 24/7 monitoring and act as both a deterrent to crime and a crucial tool for rapid response when incidents occur.

This upgraded camera system has been instrumental in creating a safer, more accessible town centre, boosting public confidence and encouraging more people to enjoy Bingham’s shops, bars, and restaurants.

“The Safer Streets project in Bingham has been a resounding success, bringing real and lasting improvements to the town,” said Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner Gary Godden.

“The installation of CCTV has made a tangible difference, not only in reducing crime but also in giving people the confidence to enjoy their town centre safely.

“I am incredibly proud of the collaborative effort between my office, Rushcliffe Borough Council, Bingham Town Council, Nottinghamshire Police, and the local community in delivering this project.

“Together, we’ve shown that targeted investment can transform public spaces and improve the quality of life for everyone.”

The success of the Safer Streets project in Bingham is a testament to the strong partnership between local agencies.

Their collaborative efforts have not only enhanced physical security but also strengthened relationships with residents and businesses.

“For me what we’ve done is created a 360-degree approach, so the consumers journey is a safe journey from the moment they come into Bingham to the moment they leave,” said Chris, owner of Number Sixteen Bistro.

“Every single business you can see on the high street in Bingham today we have our own CCTV system so what this new system has done is it’s just extending what we already have in our businesses, for the consumer to enjoy this fantastic town.”

Rushcliffe Borough Council’s Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Environment and Safety Cllr Rob Inglis added: “Although Bingham was already a relatively low crime area, we’re pleased to see the seven CCTV cameras installed in the town are further helping to reduce antisocial behaviour particularly in the town centre and boosting public confidence in local law enforcement efforts.

“This real-time surveillance allows us to promptly intervene, providing added peace of mind for residents and visitors in public spaces.

“They can be rapidly repositioned to respond to changing demands, a model that has worked well in other locations in Rushcliffe.

“We’ll continue this great partnership work through the Safer Streets initiative, making a positive difference in our local communities.”

Bingham Town Mayor, Councillor Gareth Williams said :“The Town Council are delighted with the success of the new CCTV system.

“We hope that residents and businesses will be reassured by the data and can continue to enjoy our beautiful town centre”

As the Safer Streets project draws to a close, its legacy will continue to benefit Bingham for years to come.

The improved infrastructure, combined with ongoing community engagement, has created a safer and more vibrant town centre.

The success of this initiative demonstrates the value of targeted investment in addressing local concerns and building safer communities.

Neighbourhood Police Inspector for Rushcliffe Tim Cuthbert said: “Having a new, state of the art camera system in place in Bingham town centre not only provides the Police with an extremely reliable investigative tool but crucially, it acts as a deterrent to those who may engage in antisocial behaviour or commit offences in the public domain.

“We can see from the analysis done over the last year that the Safer Street funding has helped to reduce crime and disorder in Bingham town centre.

“Combine this with our additional Police resources on the Neighbourhood Policing Team for the Rushcliffe area, we hope to maintain the reduction in calls for service for years to come.”
